The 2 lessons of this 39-minute module with Ellen Frankenstein focus on visual literacy with images and guidance in using iPads for basic photography.

Needed

  • camera app on a device (preferably iPad for lesson 1)

Lessons

Lesson 1.
Intro to Digital Photography with iPads

[length 17:18] Ellen Frankenstein shows the basic controls within an iPad's Camera App. She also explains photographer considerations of framing, exposure, and focus, and the related tools within the Camera App. File management, file sharing, and issues of permission are addressed as well. 

Lesson 2.
Visual Thinking with Images

[length 21:52] Ellen Frankenstein presents the power of explicitly teaching students skills in visual thinking about images. She explains elements of composition and framing, both as the viewer of an image and a photographer. Ideas for integration of photography with other academic content are discussed, as is advice on ethical issues within photography.
