This season in Sheet'ká

Summer in Sitka always feels like a season of abundance and connection. This is the time when so many families are out on the water fishing for salmon, filling smokehouses, canning fish, and preparing food for the winter ahead. People are picking berries, gathering from the beaches, working in gardens, and spending long days outside taking advantage of the endless daylight. Harvesting season here is about so much more than food — it’s about tradition, sharing knowledge across generations, spending time with family, and staying connected to the land and waters around us. There’s a rhythm to summer in Sitka that feels deeply rooted in community, culture, and gratitude for everything this place provides.

Three Lingít Phrases for Your Classroom This Week

Gunalchéesh (thank you)
Yak'éi ts´ootaat (good morning)
Wáa sá iyatee? (How are you?)

Try this in your class

This month: Try opening your morning meeting with a Lingít greeting. Even one phrase, even imperfectly pronounced, sends a message that this language matters here.

You don't have to be an expert.

Whether you're Native or not, we're all learning together how to bring more cultural opportunities to our students. Give it a try. Make mistakes. Ask questions. There are no wrong questions, and the cultural department is here to support you.

The cultural resources on this site are shaped by Sheet'ká Kwáan culture bearers, the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, and the Sitka Native Education Program. We are accountable to the community whose knowledge we share.
