Coloring Formline Design

In the 3 videos of this 29-minute module, Abel Ryan demonstrates how colors are traditionally used within primary and secondary formline spaces.

Materials
Needed

  • paper

  • pencil

  • eraser

  • 1 thick black marker

  • 1 thick red marker

  • 1 thin black marker

  • 1 thick dark marker (non-black)

  • 1 thick light marker (non-red)

  • practice pages linked with individual lessons

Lesson 1. Introduction to Drawing Formline

[length 16:30] Abel Ryan discusses sources of traditional colors used in Formline Art by people of the Northwest Coast. He leads you through the drawing and coloring of an ovoid, a floating ovoid, u-shapes and a trigon, all while introducing the concepts of primary and secondary formline and fine lines.

Lesson 2.
Coloring Formline Designs with Traditional Colors

[length 5:55] Abel Ryan models how to determine the placement of traditional colors within a formline design. He will guide you through determining a design's primary and secondary formline, as well as its positive and negative spaces (which will guide where the colors are used).
